Generations
The planning your family already has, extended to you.
Generations extends TradeWinds' planning to everyone in a client's family tree: a will and power of attorney at no cost to you, financial guidance whenever you want it, and no asset minimum to get started.
Somebody sent you this link. Here's the short version.
Your parent, grandparent, or sibling works with TradeWinds. Part of what they pay for extends to their family, and most families never use it because nobody knows how to bring it up. So:
- You can get a will, powers of attorney, and advance directives written, and TradeWinds pays for it.
- You can ask us financial questions about your 401(k), a house, a raise, or a baby, at no cost.
- You do not have to move any money, open any account, or become a client.
- If you do want us to manage something, there is no minimum for you.
That is the whole offer. The rest of this page is detail.
What's included
Five things, and four of them are free.
Estate documents, paid for
No cost to youA will, powers of attorney, and advance directives, plus a trust where one makes sense. We meet with you first to work out what you actually need, then handle the documents through our planning partner. TradeWinds absorbs the cost.
Financial guidance, whenever you want it
No cost to youSaving and budgeting, what to do with a 401(k), how much life insurance you need, whether to pay down the loan or invest. Bring the question you've been avoiding.
Help with the decisions that arrive suddenly
No cost to youBuying a first car. Buying or selling a home. Having a child. Changing jobs. The moments where a few hours of advice changes the next decade.
No asset minimum
Minimum waivedTradeWinds normally requires $250,000 to open a relationship. For anyone in a client's family tree, that requirement doesn't apply. A small Roth IRA is a fine place to start.
A household fee rate the whole family shares
Lower rate for everyoneOur fee schedule is tiered, so the rate declines as a relationship grows. Family members are grouped into a single household, and everyone is billed at the rate that combined total earns, including the accounts that would never reach that tier alone.
If any of these are true
Start with the one that stings.
Most people in their thirties and forties have one or two of these sitting unresolved. None of them take long to fix once someone helps.
- You don't have a will, and you know it.
- You have a 401(k) with money in whatever fund was the default.
- You're buying a house or having a kid and nobody has walked you through the money side.
- Someone in your family mentioned this once and you weren't sure what they meant.
How it works
Three steps, and the first one is an email.
- 01
Tell us who you're related to
Send us your name and the name of your family member who works with TradeWinds. That is the entire qualification process.
- 02
Have a conversation
We meet for an hour, figure out what you actually need, and answer whatever you want to ask. If estate documents make sense, we scope which ones.
- 03
We handle the documents
Your documents get prepared through our planning partner and TradeWinds covers the cost. You review and sign. Then they exist, which is the whole point.
For existing clients
You don't have to explain it. Send the page.
Talking to your kids about money is hard, and most of our clients tell us they mention Generations once and then let it drop. This page exists so you don't have to make the case yourself. Send it and let them read it on their own time.
The fee part, plainly
Our advisory fee is tiered, so the rate declines as a relationship grows. When family members become clients, our system treats the family tree as one household and bills everyone at the rate the combined total earns.
A parent at $1.8 million and two adult children with small retirement accounts become a single $2 million household. The children get a rate their own balances would never reach, and the parents' rate improves too. It is one of the few ways wealth you have already built can help the next generation without transferring a dollar.
Current fee schedules and the household aggregation policy are described in our Form ADV Part 2A.
Questions
Including the one you're actually thinking.
Anyone in an existing TradeWinds client's family tree: adult children, grandchildren, siblings, parents. If someone in your family is a client, you qualify.
A consultation to determine what you need, then the documents themselves: a will, powers of attorney, and advance directives, plus a trust where one is appropriate. TradeWinds pays the cost of preparing them through our planning partner.
No. The financial literacy guidance and the estate documents are available whether or not you become an investment client. If you do decide to open an account, there is no minimum for family members.
Families who plan together tend to stay together as clients, and we would rather earn that over a decade than sell it in a meeting. There is no obligation attached to the estate documents or the guidance.
Most people put this off for a decade. It takes an hour.
Send us your name and your family member's name. We will set up a conversation and go from there.
Estate documents are prepared through a third-party planning partner. TradeWinds does not practice law and does not provide legal advice; document preparation and any legal counsel are provided by that partner.
